This full-day lead mining field trip, led by expert Richard Lamb and archaeologist Shaun Richardson, will introduce you to the topography and former industries of Gunnerside Gill. The tour will include visits to the Sir Francis, Bunton and Blakethwaite mines, Blakethwaite smelt mill and dams (optional) and returns via a route with spectacular views over the valley.
An information handout including plans, photographs, maps and references will be sent to all participants prior to the event.
Please bring a packed lunch, warm clothes and binoculars. Dogs are welcome but must be on leads at all times. Distance: 6.5 miles (8.5 miles if visiting the Blakethwaite dams). Difficulty rating: Moderate, but the extended walk to the dams is challenging over rough terrain with no clear footpath.
