In Search of the Source of the Swale

  • Keld Heritage Centre Keld Richmond, North Yorkshire, DL11 6LJ (map)

Although the source of the River Swale is often given as the point where Birkdale and Great Sleddale Becks meet, a variety of other locations have also been given. Why isn’t there a simple, definitive answer to the question ‘where is the Swale’s source’? Local academic Prof. Mark Rutter has been trying to get to the bottom of this puzzle, as well come up with a definitive answer. This has included reviewing old maps and literature as well as a state-of-the-art hydrological analysis of Upper Swaledale, and his intriguing findings will be presented for the first time in this talk.
