Explore the Abandoned Dale

  • Keld Resource Centre DL11 6LJ (map)

Beyond Swaledale - almost, one might say, beyond reach - Great Sled Dale was once home to lead and copper mining. It has one of the most ambitious field enclosures in Swaledale, but except for rough grazing, Great Sled Dale hasn’t been farmed for over 50 years.

This walk, new for 2019, travels the length of Great Sled Dale. Using a mixture of tracks, trods and open moor, we will visit the field enclosures and mines. The beck needs to be forded on many occasions; requiring good balance or wet feet, or both if there has been recent rainfall.

Please bring a packed lunch.

The walk starts at the Ravenseat turnoff from the B6270, west of Keld
